Event News You Can Use
August 2014

It’s hard to believe that Labor Day is less than two weeks away!  While summer may be unofficially coming to a close, there are still many weeks to celebrate the season, especially outdoors!

In this month’s newsletter, I’m sharing details and strategies from two recent outdoor events … a company summer picnic and an 18th birthday/college send-off party!  I invite you to read on so that I may inspire your next celebration …

As always, thank you for reading my newsletter, sending me emails and sharing with friends!  I’m grateful for your support and look forward to collaborating on your next posh production.

{real events} Under the Tuscan Sun!

Do you work with a diverse group of colleagues? Then, consider this idea for your next company summer picnic; everyone will feel included … and excited to attend! In late July, on a gorgeous Saturday evening, my client, Jane, hosted a casual dinner party for her team and 1-2 other departments.  It was a potluck picnic where she provided the main entree and an assortment of drinks; her co-workers were encouraged to bring their favorite appetizer, side dish or dessert.

The picnic theme was Under the Tuscan Sun, a departure from the typical American BBQ and therefore, an international opportunity to celebrate diversity.  The Tuscany region of Italy is also one of Jane’s favorite travel destinations!

To bring this theme to life in Jane’s home, I suggested the following elements:

  • Bold yellow decor with lots of sunflowers, including floral arrangements (assembled by me) and fun table linens (from DC Rental).
  • Mouth-watering Italian menu including grilled chicken breast and salmon filets (which smelled so delicious), as well as an antipasti planner and Mediterranean salad (from Windows Catering).
  • Italian wines and imported beer, as well as assorted soda, bottled water and juice boxes.
  • Extra help – server and bartender – to take care of the food and drinks while Jane and her husband enjoyed their guests.

For an extra touch of Tuscany, Jane suggested a popular orange drink called a Spritz, which is made with prosecco and Aperol liqueur.  Guests loved this refreshing cocktail; I loved the color!

To complete the picnic design, Jane provided a variety of entertainment – soccer, ping-pong and video games for older kids; bubbles, chalk and pla-doh for the littlest guests; and iPod music for everyone to enjoy!

Remember there’s still plenty of time to plan your company picnic.  Please visit the Under the Tuscan Sun gallery to see more inspiring photos … and call me if you need help!

{real event} TCU Send-off!
June is such a busy time of year for high school graduation parties.  To avoid schedule conflicts, I suggested to my client, Cathy, that she wait until August and host a college send-off party, as well as 18th birthday, for her daughter.  Below is a recap of our collaboration.

This little purple creature was my muse.  It’s a horned frog, the mascot of Texas Christian University (TCU).  Cathy’s request was to decorate with purple and white school colors and incorporate horned frogs.  Creative challenged accepted!
I’ve got school spirit; how about you?! For this sophisticated yet casual outdoor party, my decor plan relied on lots of colors with three standout TCU decorations:
  • TCU yard banners greeted guests as they arrived
  • Solid purple linens were draped on the dinner buffet; white linens on the guest tables and black linens on the bar.  Cathy and I agreed that we really like the new Xtreme linen collection from Select Event Rentals!
  • Modern and whimsy floral arrangements, comprised of flowers in all shades of purple, embellished the dinner buffet, guest tables and coffee tables.  Carol of Galleria Florist did an outstanding job!
  • TCU Beverage Napkins were offered on the bar and dinner buffet.
  • Drinks were served in purple plastic cups.
  • Plastic cutlery was wrapped in white napkins and tied with purple ribbon.
  • Last but not least, purple horned frogs were scattered around the party … propped on coffee tables as well as near the gift table/photo board.  This TCU metal sculpture was my favorite.  I have a feeling he’ll be at all the TCU tailgating parties this fall! [Photo from etsy shopowner as my party pic didn’t turn out].
