Event News You Can Use
September 2014
Hello! Do you love Pinterest?  Me, too!  I spend hours searching and scrolling for ideas.  However, some days, it’s too much.  Like earlier this month; my daughter asked for a Harry Potter birthday party.  I had already produced this theme for her sister’s 10th birthday; I wanted it be different.  Pinterest revealed so many great do-it-yourself (DIY) ideas.  But alas, I didn’t have time to shop, bake and decorate; I had just accepted a fabulous job opportunity with the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce <smile>.  Feeling anxious, I nixed a lot of plans and practiced what I preach – simplicity!
In this month’s newsletter, I’m showcasing two simple yet posh parties – a Dive-In Movie Party and a Magical Spell-abration.  In producing both events, I maintained my sanity and had as much fun as my guests, which is the essence of each posh production!

Please let me know what you think!  Until next month (and inspiring ideas for my favorite holiday),

{real event} Dive-In Movie Party!

Bookmark this party for next summer!  It’s easy to plan and so much fun.

Got a backyard?  Then, you’ve got a great venue for an outdoor movie party!  Add a pool for bonus entertainment.

This family-friendly party was hosted on a Saturday evening.  The 1980’s classic movie, ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, was selected for the elementary school-age kids.  The adults enjoyed it, too!

Concessions – bowls of buttery popcorn and dishes of assorted candy, including Reese’s pieces – were served, as well as a limited selection of beverages.

Decor was simple – a talking ET doll and inexpensive movie posters (both bought on ebay) plus existing table linens, serving dishes and colorful flowers from the grocery store.

An existing screen and projector was used to watch the movie.  These items are also locally available for rent.

Again, simple plan = lots of fun!  To see more photos, please visit this Dive-In Movie Party album.

{real event}  Magical Spell-abration

If your child loves Harry Potter friends, wands and adventures (as opposed to dementors, horcruxes and the Dark Arts), consider this ‘Magical Spell-abration’ for your next party! A dozen wizards-in-training were invited to celebrate my daughter’s 8th birthday.  After colorful drinks magically sorted them into houses, they grouped in teams for a Magical Creatures Scavenger Hunt (Beanie Boo keychains hidden in the woods).  The team that found the golden snitch automatically won.Prof Fizzwiffle performing magic with the birthday girl Next, they enjoyed a 45-minute magical performance by Professor Fizzwiffle.  Lots of audience participation and laughter! The little wizards played outside before cake and ice cream.  As they departed, they received goodie bags (see photo below) – the Beanie Boo keychain and t-shirt from the arrival game and a Wizard activity book, which I bought via the Junior League of Northern Virginia online bookfair to benefit local community programs.  Score!

So where did I scale back to reduce anxiety?  Decor and food.  Instead of all the crazy Pinterest ideas, I decorated with Halloween props and served my daughter’s favorite snacks and then, splurged on a fun royal spider linen and custom birthday cake, respectively!

The result … good times!
